Because of the war in Afganistan, Pashto is presently one of the world’s most important languages. It is spoken by some 50-60 million people (the population of Texas and California combined). While it is the official language of Afganistan, it is also spoken by 15% of the population of Pakistan. The closest relative to the Pashto alphabet is Persian. Both of these scripts are very similar to Arabic.
