For decades the office of University Publications was under the auspices of the Secretary of the University, a title held from 1964 to 1979 by Robert A. McGaw. It was McGaw who developed the first public relations program and branding, with the shield symbol, introduced in 1962.
Though now retired as a branding element, the popular shield symbol is a historic remnant of that era, and is still seen carved in stone and glass in various nooks and crannies at Vanderbilt. The current logo officially replaced this symbol in April 2003.
The Publications office was merged with the University Design office in February 1990. The new office of Publications & Design moved to the Baker Building in fall 1991. Gary Gore, the first University Designer and director of the office, retired in fall 1996 and was replaced by the current director, Judy Orr, assistant vice chancellor within the division of Public Affairs. She joined the staff in April 1997. When the photography service was expanded and incorporated into the office in 2000, it was re-named Creative Services.
