Brand Style Guide

Federal Trademark Registration Symbol

Vanderbilt has an extensive portfolio of trademarks registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and the federal trademark registration symbol (®) should be included when using these trademarks.

Examples include:

  • Vanderbilt®
  • Vanderbilt University®
  • V Oak Leaf Design®
  • Vanderbilt Commodores®
  • Anchor Down®
  • Anchor Design®
  • Star V Design®
  • Commodores®
  • Vandy®

The circle R should always be present on promotional products, e.g., merchandise, hard goods, awards. However, the circle R may be omitted on products where the registration mark will be illegible (i.e., banners, flags and signs) and on official university stationery and letterhead. You may also omit the circle R when the university’s trademark/copyright statement (see below) is included on websites and printed materials such as posters and brochures.

Use the following statement in print and web communications to protect our trademarks in cases where a federal registration mark (circle R) is not used.

Vanderbilt® and the Vanderbilt logos are registered trademarks of The Vanderbilt University.

Please note: Be sure to insert the current year after the copyright symbol.
