Graduates from August 2019, December 2019 and May 2020 are eligible to participate in Commencement ceremonies on May 8, 2020. This includes the Main Ceremony on Alumni Lawn, followed by the School of Medicine Commencement Ceremony in Langford Auditorium. You will receive email messages from both the University Registrar and the School of Medicine about confirming your attendance and other important information. Messages will be sent to your permanent (non-VU) email address as specified on your intent to graduate form. Please reply to all messages when requested. The School of Medicine will continue to contact graduates until we receive a response.
The best way to find information and stay up-to-date on day of changes is to download the Vanderbilt App for Apple or Android phones. Be sure to turn on notifications for last minute alerts of potential venue changes due to inclement weather.
All graduating students must order and wear regalia (cap, gown, hood) in order to participate, and are responsible for ordering it through the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Students must pick up their regalia at the upper level of Barnes and Noble at Vanderbilt, located at 2525 West End Avenue, across from Centennial Park, on Wednesday and Thursday, May 6th and 7th, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Please bring a photo ID, or allow someone to present your Vanderbilt ID to pick up your regalia on your behalf. Regalia will not be available at Langford Auditorium .
Class Day Ceremony and Reception
Graduating Doctor of Medicine students and their guests are invited to attend the Class Day ceremony at 4:00 pm on May 7th, followed by a reception in Light Hall. More details to come.
Main Commencement Ceremony
The Main Ceremony takes place on Alumni Lawn (Memorial Gymnasium in case of severe weather, see Commencement app). Students should arrive at the south end of McGill Hall (located on the west side of Alumni Lawn) by 8:25 am. where they will line up by degree. The procession begins promptly at 9:00 am. When released from the Main Ceremony, graduate students should walk to Langford Auditorium for the School of Medicine Commencement Ceremony (please allow 15 minutes).
All School of Medicine graduates will receive their diplomas and PhD graduates and will be hooded at the Diploma Ceremony that directly follows the School of Medicine Commencement Ceremony. The Diploma Ceremony will be held in Langford Auditorium. More information to come.
We will add details about other programs' ceremonies as they are finalized.
All graduating students and faculty should arrive in Light Hall for the School of Medicine Commencement Ceremony by 10:30 am. Students and faculty will check-in and receive instructions for line-up, processional, hooding, diploma, and photos.
Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis in Langford Auditorium. Tickets are required for School of Medicine ceremony. Handicapped seating is located in designated areas.
- Please keep ALL aisles clear at all times for the processional/recessional.
- Please refrain from cell phone use during the ceremony.
- Smoking is strictly prohibited.
- Pets are prohibited other than official service animals.
A professional photographer takes photos as graduates shake hands with the Dean on stage. As a courtesy to all in attendance, please ask your guests to refrain from advancing to the front of the stage area to take photos. After the ceremony, the stage is available for additional graduate and guest photo opportunities.
Parking for all guests and participants is available at the 25th Avenue Garage, Kensington Garage, Terrace Place Garage, and Wesley Place Garage. Shuttle buses will be available from all four garages. In addition, a shuttle from the Main Ceremony on Alumni Lawn to the School of Medicine Commencement Ceremony will run at 10:15 am. for special needs guests. Refer to the shuttle service map and the Vanderbilt Commencement website for complete schedules and locations.
Following the School of Medicine Commencement Ceremony, there will be a reception in Light Hall for all graduating students and their guests.
