While this annual conference usually is held in locations across North America each summer, for the past two summers it has been all digital just like much of higher education. Throughout the two week conference, I attended many virtual workshops and sessions presented by leaders from different colleges and universities. One of the best workshops was titled \u201c20+ Tips for Improving Discussions in Brightspace\u201d. While I can\u2019t duplicate the entire workshop here, I do want to share my top 5 tips that I took away from this workshop.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><strong>Tip #1:<\/strong> Place common directions in Forum descriptions.&nbsp;<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Forum<\/strong> descriptions would apply to every discussion topic within that forum. Putting information here saves time having to repeat yourself in each topic, and serves as a reminder every time users access that discussion topic.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7125 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/brightspace\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/156\/2021\/08\/forum-description-in-topics-1-1024x651.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-wpfsx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2021\/08\/forum-description-in-topics-1-1024x651.png 1024w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-wpfsx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2021\/08\/forum-description-in-topics-1-768x488.png 768w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-wpfsx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2021\/08\/forum-description-in-topics-1.png 1186w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><strong>Tip #2:<\/strong> Create <strong>Video Notes<\/strong> to provide faster responses to common questions, individuals, or groups.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Instead of typing out individual responses to several topics, instructor can use video notes to address a group of students with the same question, or address a wide array of topics in a quick and efficient manner.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><strong>Tip #3:<\/strong> Use @ mentions to boost engagement.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is a newer feature! Mentioning someone with the @ symbol notifies them under their <strong>Subscription Alerts<\/strong> that they have been mentioned in a post. That makes it more likely that they will at least read the post or even reply and engage more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7119 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-wpfsx\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/133\/2021\/08\/unnamed.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"185\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><strong>Tip #4:<\/strong> See details about edited posts.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you see that a post that has been edited by a student, you can review their edit history to review what content was changed and when. This could be useful to make sure content was submitted by the due date, and to check if attachments have been edited.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i><strong>Tip #5:<\/strong> Add personality with Bitmojis.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vanderbilt.edu\/brightspace\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/156\/2021\/08\/bitmoji-hello-150x150.png\" alt=\"Cartoonish image of a person waving hello with the word hello spelled out underneath\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" align=\"left\">Whether it is with Bitmojis or other images, graphics are a great way to liven up discussions and engage more users.
