about us

Since 1968, the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) has worked to develop culturally responsible Black law students and legal professionals through activism, mentorship, and the promotion of academic excellence. In an effort to remain responsive to the needs of the Black community, NBLSA has grown to include over 200 chapters nationwide, including Vanderbilt’s chapter which was initiated in 2005. Since its founding, Vanderbilt’s Black Law Students Association has worked tirelessly to cultivate talented Black attorneys who endeavor to positively impact the community.

The mission of Vanderbilt’s Black Law Students Association is to utilize the collective resources of its members, advisors, and alumni community to:

  • Articulate and promote the professional needs, goals, and development of Black law students;
  • Foster and encourage academic success and professional competence;
  • Focus upon the relationship of Black attorneys with the legal structure of the United States;
  • Instill in the Black attorney and law student a greater awareness of commitment to the needs of the Black community and the diaspora;
  • Influence the legal community to bring about meaningful change to meet the needs of the Black community;
  • Facilitate the professional needs and development of all students of color and allies; and
  • Do all things necessary and lawful to accomplish these purposes.
