Previous Offerings

If you are a participant hoping to review workshop materials, or a prospective partner hoping to find a workshop topic that would work for your group, here is information about some of the workshops we have offered.

 

Using Media in Blackboard
Date: Monday, October 19
Time: 1:00pm-1:30pm
Location: CFT workshop space location
Facilitator: Stacey Johnson, CFT Assistant Director for Educational Technology
Audience: Faculty and Graduate Student Instructors

This 30 minute workshop will deal with issues around using media in Blackboard courses, and introduce participants to Blackboard integrated tools and policies designed to address these issues. First, the Kaltura My Media tool, provides a place for students and instructors to create, store, and share videos, screencasts, and webcam videos. Second, library and center resources allow instructors to access copyright-cleared media for use in their courses. Come learn with us about to best include a variety of media in your Blackboard course. Following the workshop, participants are invited to stay for drop-in support hours where a team of Blackboard specialists will be available to work with Blackboard users to apply these new tools in their own courses.

 

Cheating and Plagiarism

Date: Monday, September 21
Time: 1:00pm-1:30pm
Location: CFT workshop space location

Audience: Faculty and Graduate Student Instructors


This 30 minute workshop will deal with issues around cheating and plagiarism, and introduce participants to two Blackboard integrated tools designed to address these issues. First, SafeAssign, now part of the Assignments tool on Blackboard, can provide a framework for helping students understand proper citation in academic writing. Second, Respondus Lockdown Browser, a tool licensed for the 2015-2016 school year, can provide a more secure testing format for  online tests and quizzes. Following the workshop, participants are invited to stay for drop-in support hours where a team of Blackboard specialists will be available to work with Blackboard users to apply these new tools in their own courses.

 

Blackboard Tools Workshops at the Center for Second Language Studies (CSLS)

Date: Tuesday and Wednesday, September 1 and 2 – Testing for Retention
and Tuesday and Wednesday, September 8 and 9 – Encouraging L2 Communication
Time: 12:15pm-1:00pm
Location: CSLS, Furman Hall 001  location

Audience: Faculty and Graduate Student Instructors

These 45 minute workshops aimed at language teachers will explore a different Blackboard tool each week. On Sept 1 and 2, we will explore the testing tool and how it can be used to help students learn and retain language. On Sept 8 and 9, we will discuss the use of discussion boards and media tools to encourage students to communicate in a second language.

 

Intro to Blackboard

Date: Monday, August 24
Time: 2:00pm-3:30pm

Audience: Faculty and Graduate Student Instructors

Intro to Blackboard is a workshop for instructors new to the Blackboard course management system, or for those who have been away for a while and need a refresher. Blackboard, formerly “OAK”, can be useful tool in managing your courses and enhancing student learning. This workshop will introduce Blackboard’s most commonly used features, including a few new ones that have been added this year like rubrics and integrated SafeAssign. Participants will explore how to create assignments and discussion boards, how to post and interact with course materials, and how to manage the grade center. This hands-on session will take place in a computer lab, but feel free to bring your own laptop if you prefer.
