Known Issues

When Blackboard experiences outages, the outage and its resolution will be recorded to this page.

018 – Wednesday, August 2, 2017: 10am CST – Some users might have experienced trouble logging into Blackboard with their VUNET credentials. VUIT resolved the authentication issue.

017- Tuesday, February 28, 2017: Amazon Web Services experienced an outage which effected the crocodoc tool in the grade center. This outage prevented submitted student assignments such as word document from being viewed by the instructor in the grade center. This outage occurred approximately from noon – 2:45 CT.

016 – Wednesday, December 21, 2016: Blackboard was taken offline to perform the system update as scheduled on Dec 20 at 11:30pm Central, for a duration of 8 hours. Upon completion, our Blackboard admins noticed that the updates were not actually put in place by Blackboard Inc. Therefore, Blackboard will now need go offline again in order to apply the update. Blackboard will be inaccessible on Dec 22, 2016 beginning at 12:30am Central. Blackboard will become accessible on Dec 22 at 11am Central.

015 – Tuesday, December 20, 2016: Beginning at 11:30pm Central Time, the Blackboard system will be inaccessible due to scheduled maintenance. The system will be accessible again on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 by 7:00am Central Time.

014 – Thursday, November 10, 2016: Blackboard experienced an issue with its security certificate (https). Review:  Blackboard support services are experiencing unexpected delays but are working on the issue.  There is no security risk associated with proceeding through browser warnings to the site, but components may not be functioning correctly. Chrome users, please choose a different browser at this time in order to proceed through the security warning.

013 – Monday, November 7, 2016 9:40am – 10:00am: The CAS authentication system experienced an issue that did not allow users to authenticate into Blackboard using their VUnetID and password.

012 – Friday, June 10, 2016 10:00am: Kaltura was down for several hours as a result from a DNS error originating from their domain. Access was restored Friday afternoon.

011- Sunday, May 22, 2016 8:00pm: Blackboard’s upgrade has been completed. All features and tools should be working normally. To report any incidents, please contact Blackboard support at

010- Saturday, May 21, 2016 8:00pm-Sunday, May 22, 2016 8:00pm: Blackboard is scheduled for upgrade during this 24 hour window. Service will be down during the upgrade.

009 – Monday, April 11, 2016 6:00am – 9:00am: Widespread campus network outage. Impacted was not impacted.

008 – Friday April 8th, 2016 from 2:00am – 5:00am: Scheduled data center maintenance for managed hosting. Service interruption is not expected, however we are notifying you
just in case you experience any intermittent connectivity for few minutes during this
maintenance window.

007- Sunday March 21, 2016 from 12:05am: A five minute interruption in all outgoing and incoming internet traffic to or from Vanderbilt. This outage should only last approximately 5 minutes.

006- Sunday March 6, 2016 from 5:00pm-8:45pm: The WileyPlus integration with Blackboard was interrupted for nearly 4 hours due to technical issues on the WileyPlus side. No other Blackboard functionality was affected.

005- Thursday February 25, 2016: Vanderbilt University internet was down from 6:04 to 6:13am this morning. No Blackboard-specific outages were reported.

004- Monday February 22, 2016 from 3:15pm: The WileyPlus integration with Blackboard was interrupted for approximately 30 minutes due to technical issues on the WileyPlus side. No other Blackboard functionality was affected.

003- Tuesday January 26, 2016: Due to unresolvable issues with the Delegated and Anonymous Grading features in Blackboard in Assignments, we no longer recommend either feature. Users who want more information about the tools can email us at for specifics on best uses.

002- Thursday January 21, 2016- 2:49pm: Blackboard outage has been resolved. The site is now available to users. Please email us at if problems persist.

001- Thursday January 21, 2016- 1:57pm: We have received reports that Blackboard is unavailable to users. We are aware of the issue and are working with the vendor to investigate the problem. Updates will be posted to the this page on our support site.
