The special relationship between Luke and R2 continues in The Empire Strikes Back. When Luke’s health returns after almost freezing to death on Hoth, R2 accompanies Luke on his mission to the Degabah system for the first dose of jedi training from Yoda. Again R2 demonstrates his devotion to Luke by tagging along on an adventure which could have posed danger to the little android. R2 remains by LukeÂ’s side through his instruction by Yoda and on Cloud City where R2 follows Luke until the door to the room containing the carbon freezer, where Luke eventually battles Darth Vader, separates R2 from Luke. R2 unintentionally becomes separated from Luke, but R2 manages to locate Han, Leia, C-3PO, and Chubacca in Cloud City and escape with them. Lucas acknowledges R2Â’s responsibility for the rebelsÂ’ successful escape from Cloud City when R2 opens the locked door leading the Millenium Falcon. R2 also repairs the FalconÂ’s sabotaged hyperdrive, allowing the rebels to escape from the Imperial attack. Not only is R2 concerned for his masterÂ’s safety, but for the safety of the others as well. Finally, in the closing scene of Empire, Luke, Leia, R2, and C-3PO all stand before the window of a rebel ship peering out at a universe. The group seems like a family, and the audience realizes that the androids are just as important to the success of the rebellion as their human counterparts. Clearly, Lucas emphasizes the human characteristics of R2 and C-3PO by illustrating the androidsÂ’ dedication to Luke and the rebellion.
