University of Edinburgh - Ph.D.
University of Northumbria - B.Sc.

Ewa received her B.S. in Forensic Science from the University of Northumbria in England which involved a year in industry working for a pharmaceutical services company. She pursed an undergraduate research thesis under the supervision of Dr. Justin Perry studying the sources of yellow natural yellow dyes used in historical objects with liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. Samples included dyes taken from works of art Reclining Tiger by Jean-Baptiste Oudry and the 1893 version of The Scream by Edvard Munch. Ewa completed her Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry in the School of Chemistry at University of Edinburgh in Scotland under the guidance of Prof. Perdita E. Barran. Her research in the Barran group investigated the effects of different drift gases on protein ions using ion mobility mass spectrometry, as well as exploring the use of IM-MS to examine intrinsic disorder in proteins. She assessed the dynamic conformational architecture and thermal stability of the cellular tumour antigen p53 and its E3 ubiquitin ligase Mdm2. In collaboration with Dr Penka Nikolova (King’s College London, UK) she interrogated the tumorigenic mutations which occur in the core domain of p53, as well the protein - DNA interactions. Additionally, she was also involved in work in collaboration with Prof Collin Creaser (Loughborough University, UK) investigating the use of mobility standards in IM-MS. Ewa has joined Prof. John McLean’s laboratory in April 2014 as a postdoctoral research fellow where she is developing expertise in instrument building for the structural mass spectrometry filed. Her current projects include the development of a cryogenic ion mobility mass spectrometer for high resolution measurements as well as work on the Agilent prototype drift-tube ion mobility mass spectrometer.
