Volumetric and Graduated Glassware

Pipetting

Pipettes are used to deliver a known volume of liquid from one container to another.  Prior to being used, the pipette should be thoroughly cleaned.  If the pipette is clean, no droplets will remain on the inner surfaces after the liquid has been drained.

If you need to clean your pipette, follow steps 1 through 6 below using glassware soap solution, then rinse thoroughly with tap water, and finally with DI water.

1. Hold the pipette in your "dominant hand" (if you are right-handed, hold it in your right hand, or the left if you are left-handed) and the bulb in the other hand.  It should be held between the thumb and middle finger, with the index finger placed on the top. See this picture.

2. Hold the pipette near the top and place the rubber bulb on top of it.
