Resources for Writing

Writing Studio Library

The Writing Studio has a library that includes general handbooks, research and style guides, texts that review discipline-specific practices, and texts on different types of writing tasks, such as resume-writing, technical writing, and academic writing.

Featured Book: Songwriting for Dummies

The Writing Studio library includes an array of books on writing of all kinds, from analytical essays to creative non-fiction, from argumentation to poetry.  If life in Music City has your mind itching with ideas for a good song, stop by and check out Songwriting for Dummies (2002), by Jim Peterik, Dave Austin, and Mary Ellen Bickford.  This concise introduction to songwriting includes helpful tips for every stage of the writing process, from invention to revision and publication.  Do you ever get stuck when you can’t find the perfect rhyme?  Trying to force rhyme during the invention stage can lead quickly to a frustrating writer’s block.  Instead of insisting on perfection, Jim Peterick suggests creating a dummy lyric – a line not intended as a permanent fixture of the song, but existing primarily to mark parameters such as the number of syllables per line or a possible rhyme scheme.  In creating temporary lyrics as placeholders, you allow yourself to move forward with invention, and you may hit upon a line later in the song that’s a keeper!
