Dinner and a Draft with Kate Daniels
The Writing Studio organizes “Dinner and a Draft” a few times a year to give students a chance to talk with distinguished faculty as writers, not just teachers. Over a delicious dinner with Frank and Jane Wcislo, our generous and engaging hosts, the honored guest shares her work in progress. At the Dean of the Commons House on March 22nd, professor and poet Kate Daniels joined us along with, four undergraduate students, two graduate students, and Dylan Reed. Various majors were represented, and most participants were also poets and fiction writers as well as academic writers. In talking about creativity, about making use of whatever time, place, scrap of paper, or computer available, Daniels told us about how at the age of five, before she could read or write, she would dictate stories to her mother. She also brought a few earlier versions of poems from her most recent collection, A Walk in Victoria’s Secret, so we could see and discuss her revision process, especially how ideas and expressions, even titles, develop and get settled. Be on the lookout for more Dinner and a Draft nights in the 2011-2012 academic school year.
