November 2010 Updates
Fall Workshops for Graduate Students
Over the last several weeks the Writing Studio has offered a number of workshops, which aimed to help graduate students think about and improve their own writing processes. The first two of these were presented on September 25th and October 2nd and in collaboration with the Graduate School and focused on writing grant proposals. Then, on October 23rd, the Writing Studio led a morning workshop for dissertation writers and an afternoon workshop for dissertation proposal and prospectus writers. Finally, on November 4th, studio staff talked with students in a Graduate Department of Religion seminar about writing journal articles and responding productively to colleagues who are revising journal articles. In all of these workshops, participants were reminded of the importance of explicitly situating one’s research in one’s field as well as making a clear intervention in that field. Moreover, since it is difficult to tend to both of these pursuits at the same time, graduate students were encouraged to expand their writing processes to involve conversation with colleagues and ample time to revisit and revise initial drafts.
