No. The university pays our consultants, so you don’t have to!

What happens in an appointment?
You will meet one-to-one with a Writing Consultant to discuss your ideas and writing. Expect these sessions to be very interactive, as our consultants are trained to engage you in conversation about your writing—not to edit your work for you! Often, consultants will also suggest or initiate writing excercises and activities to help you with specific writing strategies. Appointments begin on the hour and last 50 minutes.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?
You should bring materials for your current writing project, whatever that may be. Most students bring in a draft of some sort, but it isn’t necessary; if you want to brainstorm, for example, you might just bring your assignment sheet, topic, or any notes that you have. Most importantly, though, you’ll need a willingness to discuss and revise your ideas and writing, as well as enough time after the appointment (and before the assignment is due) for more revision.

Do I have to have a finished paper to make an appointment?
Not at all. We work with students at any stage of the writing process, so you can come in at any point—whether you’re brainstorming a topic, completing a draft, doing final revisions, or any point in between!

Does my appointment have to take place in front of everybody in the Studio?
No. There are tucked-away spaces and the patio outside if you prefer a more private setting.
