A Writing Consultant can visit your classroom to talk with students about Studio services or to guide students in a brief writing exercise. Please choose one of the following formats:

Concentrated Presentation Standard Presentation Workshop Presentation

5 – 10 minutes

  • Brief class discussion on how the Writing Studio can help with writing
  • Explanation of consultation sessions

15 – 20 minutes

  • Directed group reflection on students’ writing practices and habits
  • Group writing exercise emphasizing an invention or revision technique
Please note: Presentations that incorporate an invention exercise should be timed to coincide with the distribution of a course assignment. Alternately, presentations that incorporate a revision exercise should be timed so that students will have drafted work to bring to class.
  • Explanation of consultation sessions and other Writing Studio services

25 – 40 minutes

  • In-class workshops involve collaboration between the course instructor and a Writing Consultant to determine how best to address a particular writing concern in relation to specific course material. In-class workshops are designed to consume no more than half of a course period, so that instructors can follow up on a consultant’s presentation during the remaining class time.
  • Frequently requested topics include:
    • Academic Voice
    • Research Papers
    • Organization
    • Revision
    • Thesis Statements
    • Topic Sentences
    • Comparative Essays
  • In-class writing workshop request requirements:
    • Workshops must be requested at least one full week before the requested date in order to allow writing studio staff enough time to prepare the workshop.
    • Instructors must be willing to meet with a representative of the writing studio before the workshop so that the workshop can be tailored to the particular needs of the instructor.  Meetings typically take no more than 30 minutes.
