Faculty
Faculty members are the best advocates of Writing Studio services; we thank you for recommending Studio appointments to undergraduate and graduate students at all skill levels.
Our work is focused on helping students to become better writers. Our mission is not to proofread or try to create perfect papers but to help students who request help become increasingly more effective and independent writers and thinkers. Primarily, a writing consultation provides students with opportunities for thinking critically and responsibly about the choices they make as writers.
Besides generally recommending one-to-one writing consultations to students, we invite you to consider the following:
Add Writing Studio information to your course syllabus
One of the easiest ways to let students know that you want them to make use of the Writing Studio is to include a supportive statement on your syllabus, on OAK, or on individual assignments. We invite you to copy the example below and paste it into your syllabus:
In addition to meeting with me during office hours to discuss coursework, I strongly encourage you to take advantage of the services at the Writing Studio; getting feedback benefits writers at all skill levels. Studio consultants can offer a fresh perspective on any of your writing projects. For more information and to schedule an appointment, visit vanderbilt.edu/writing.
Use our Handouts
You may wish to use copies of our handouts, as well as links to other web-based resources, as you plan an assignment or class discussion. We welcome you to share with us copies of handouts that you have developed for students in your courses. To access the Research Assignment Design Rubric, click here. Invite a Writing Consultant to introduce your class to the Writing Studio
To help your students feel more at ease talking with others about their works in progress, you may invite one of our consultants to give a ten-minute presentation to your class. We'll provide all the essential details about the Studio and invite students to ask questions about how we can meet their individual needs. You can request a visit at any point in the semester; we recommend scheduling these visits either early in the semester or near the time when you distribute a significant writing assignment.
Invite a Writing Consultant to deliver a workshop in your classroom
In-class workshops reinforce course-writing instruction through directed activities and discussion. Workshops are designed for a 50 minute class session.
Schedule a writing consultation
Our faculty writing consultants are available to discuss your writing projects, including grant proposals, articles, and book manuscripts. We are also happy to discuss your writing process and help you make efficient use of your writing time. To schedule an appointment for yourself, please contact our Office Administrator by emailing writing.studio@vanderbilt.edu.
Promote Writing Studio eventsĀ
We host event throughout the year to promote conversation about writing habits and practices.
We encourage you and your students regularly to check our web page for featured Studio events.
Nominate students to participate in the Undergraduate Writing Symposium
Every year in March, the Writing Studio celebrates exceptional student writing by having students share their writing at the Undergraduate Writing Symposium. Nominations of papers are solicited at the end of the fall semester.
Nominate students to become writing consultants
At the beginning of each spring semester the Writing Studio solicits nominations for students to work as writing consultants.
