Publish or Perish?

This writing group is designed to support graduate students as they prepare a journal article for publication. Participants will work in small groups, peer reviewing each others’ work. Practical advice on the writing and submission process will be taken from Wendy Belcher’s book Writing Your Journal Article in 12 Weeks: A Guide to Academic Publishing and Success. Belcher’s book will be distributed to participants free of charge and will be theirs to keep. Special attention will be paid to clarifying and strengthening arguments, engaging appropriate literature in one’s field, and revision. The writing group will meet twelve times, on Tuesdays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. beginning September 11 and ending December 4.
Ph.D. students from across the University who have completed their coursework are welcome to apply. Applicants must verify that they have journal-ready (fully collected) data or a conference or course paper suitable for revision into article form.
Participants must attend all meetings, complete all weekly reading and writing activities thoroughly and on time, participate in group discussion and peer review, and submit their articles to journals by December 15. Participants must also be prepared to set aside time each day for completing assigned writing tasks.
