The interdisciplinary major in Women’s and Gender Studies consists of 33 hours of course work, distributed as follows:
  1. Sex and Gender in Everyday Life. Women’s and Gender Studies 150. (3)
  2. Women and Gender in Transnational Context. Women’s and Gender Studies 201. (3)
  3. U.S. Feminisms. Women’s and Gender Studies 205. (3)
  4. Senior Seminar. Women’s and Gender Studies 291, to be taken in fall semester of the student’s final year. (3)
  5. 21 hours of electives, selected from Women’s and Gender Studies Program courses, any courses dual-listed in Women’s and Gender Studies, or any other course that meets the approval of the director, not used to satisfy the above requirements. These elective courses may include up to 6 credit hours for internship training, independent research, and readings (Women’s and Gender Studies 288a-c).


Honors Program in Women's & Gender Studies requires 36 hours of course work and is designed to afford exceptional students the opportunity to undertake independent research on a topic in feminist and gender scholarship. This is done in consultation with faculty members.

The program is open to all WGS majors with junior standing who have completed at least 21 credit hours of the major and who have earned a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and a 3.3 grade point average in Women's & Gender Studies courses. Students must be approved for acceptance into the honors program by the program director and to graduate must:

  1. Complete 36 hours of coursework
  2. Complete the required courses for the major (described above)
  3. Submit for approval a short description of the proposed project to the director of Women's & Gender Studies by the spring semester of the junior year;
  4. Complete 6 hours of independent research, WST 298, 299 (Honors Research and Project), typically during the senior year;
  5. Undertake an honors Project to be completed in the spring of the senior year; and
  6. Pass an oral examination on the topic of the Project.

Candidates for Honors in Women's & Gender Studies may, with the written permission of the director of the program, substitute one 300-level course in gender and feminist studies for one 200-level course required for the major. Such permission must be acquired prior to enrollment in the course.
