A couple of weeks ago, we
took a day trip in Augusto's truck to the coast at Punta Islay,
which is a point that juts out into the Pacific in southern Peru
(west of Arequipa). It's obviously a dry area--the coastal region
of far southern Peru and northern Chile is the driest desert in
the world. Although it hardly ever rains, during this time of
the year (February), the coast does get foggy and humid. The coast
here is extremely rich and productive, and fishing is one of the
primary industries in Peru.
