An overview of the village of Yanque, showing the steep river gorge below and some of the terracing on the lower slopes that is used primarily for corn production. We have recovered strong evidence for a direct Inka imperial presence in the area of the village itself, so it appears that the Spanish chose the location of this "reduction" village (i.e. where residents were forcibly resettled from many smaller villages and hamlets in order to consolidate political control in the valley) in part due to the presence of a large and important prehispanic settlement at this location. This photo was taken in late September, when the earliest rains were just starting in the valley. Note the green patches above the village, which are early rotations of alfalfa for cattle grazing.
