The Ada Bell Stapleton/Blanche Henry Weaver Scholarship

The scholarship honors Dr. Ada Bell Stapleton, who was Professor of English and the first Dean of Women and Dr. Blanche Henry Weaver who served as Assistant Professor of History, Director of the Master of Arts in Teaching Program, Dean of Women and Assistant Dean of the Graduate School.

The Vanderbilt Woman’s Club awarded $25,000 to ten recipients in scholarships for 2012-2013. The Scholarship Committee included Melinda Balser and Yolonda Brooks-Robinson (co-chairs), Kendra Holroyd, Nicole Thorne Jenkins, and Cindy Slobogin.

Michael McGee: Michael is a junior Peabody student majoring in Human and Organizational Development. He is currently a Head Resident for the Office of Housing and Residential Education and a tutor at an area grade school. Michael has held positions in MOSAIC, Black Student Alliance, AmbassaDores and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

Ashley Hoffman: Ashley is a junior with a double major in Biology and Music. She has been involved with Student Government and is a member of the environmental group, SPEAR. Ashley is currently working in a stem cell lab alongside Vanderbilt researchers, and has improved her German language skills and music interests during a study abroad semester in Vienna.

Jessica Nieto: Jessica is a sophomore majoring in pre-med Neuroscience. She has mentored a young girl through The Afterschool Program, and has participated for two years of community service through alternative spring break. Jessica was selected to be a lab assistant at the Vanderbilt Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery. Her goal is to attend medical school.

Jennifer Kim: Jennifer is a sophomore majoring in Economics and Human and Organizational Development. She served as a committee member for the Asian Pan American Heritage board and is a member of the Vanderbilt Red Cross club. Jennifer currently serves as the treasurer for Vanderbilt WishMakers and works in the general chemistry lab storeroom.

Emily Strong: Emily is a junior majoring in Elementary Education. She’s involved in a number of service opportunities through the Baptist Campus Ministries including spring break service trips. She is also a captain in the Running Club where she encourages students to exercise and practice healthy habits. Emily has been employed at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for several years, an experience that is sure to help her as she begins her student teaching this year.

Jordan Amann: Jordan is a sophomore majoring in Voice Performance and is an active member in Vanderbilt Symphonic and Chamber Choirs and Vanderbilt Opera Theatre. As a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, Jordan has worked to raise awareness of domestic violence and has helped raise money for the YWCA. Jordan has worked at Vanderbilt Child Care and as a volunteer in the Psychology Department and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations.

Abby Pribish: Abby is a sophomore majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology. She is active in a number of clubs including Student Volunteers for Science, Wilderness Skills and Vanderbilt Chess Club. Abby enjoys living in the McTyeire International House where she has the opportunity to interact with students from different countries. She has worked in a biological research lab conducting experiments around cell migration.

Alisha Washington: Alisha is a sophomore majoring in African American and Diaspora Studies and Communication Studies. She serves as co-president of the Vanderbilt After School Program where she mentors and tutors area schoolchildren. She is also a member of Vanderbilt Public Relations Society, has worked in the A&S Dean’s Office and plays competitive flag football.

Rachel Abeshouse: Rachel is a junior Neuroscience major who is passionate about the media. She serves as the director of programming for Vanderbilt Television and has been involved in the Vanderbilt Student Film Festival. As a member of the Interaxon Club, she teaches neuroscience to local elementary and high school students.

Alexandra Hall: Alexandra is a junior in the College of Arts and Science. She is a proud member of the L.I.F.E. Project which partners college women with local high school girls to promote service, scholarship and good character. She celebrates diversity by working with such cultural campus organizations as Masala-SACE, the Multicultural Leadership Council and Caribbean Students Association. .

All our scholars are involved in numerous volunteer activities on campus,
in the community and internationally.
