Dr. Dwayne Sagen

Director of Bands

Dr. Sagen has been Director of Bands at Vanderbilt University since 1986. Before coming to Vanderbilt, Dr. Sagen served as the Asst. Director of Bands and Chairman of the Music Department at the University of Mississippi. Dr. Sagen is the author of numerous articles and papers on instrumental education and is very active as a clinician and adjudicator in the U.S. and Canada. Dr. Sagen also serves as Assistant Dean of the Blair School of Music.

Gavin Smith

Assistant Director of Bands

Gavin Smith received his Bachelors of Music Education from Texas Tech University. He was a member of the Goin' Band from Raiderland as well as many other ensembles. In addition, he marched lead soprano for the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. Mr. Smith has taught high school band in Holliday, TX, and received his Masters in Conducting from Kansas State University where he served as a Graduate Assistant with the KSU Bands.

 

Cindi Gallagher

Cindi Gallagher has worked at Vanderbilt since 1999. She is a flute and piccolo player and performs at church and with the Vanderbilt Community Concert Band. For assistance with most all band related activities, Mrs. Gallagher is a wealth of information.

 

Jim Reed

Drumline Instructor

Jim Reed has served on the board of directors and the staff of Music City Legend since its founding in 2003. He has served in several different roles on the staff, such as percussion arranger, drill writer, brass arranger, percussion caption head, and his current role of program coordinator, in which he has served since 2006. Jim has also been a performing member with the corps in the percussion section all four years of the corps' existence.
     Mr. Reed received his Bachelor's of Music in Music Education degree from the University of Tennessee - Martin in 1998, and has been teaching in the Middle Tennessee area since that time. Jim is currently serving as the band director at Rucker-Stewart Middle School in Gallatin, TN. He has served as band director at Goodpasture Christian School and East Robertson High School. Jim also designs programs for other high school bands, indoor drumlines, winterguard, and drum corps. He has performed with such groups as the Spirit of Atlanta Drum & Bugle Corps, the University of Tennessee Pride of the Southland Marching Band, the Nashville Wind Ensemble, the Vanderbilt Community Band, the Arrangers' Publishing Studio Band, and several ensembles at the University of Tennessee - Martin. Mr. Reed also judges frequently in area marching band contests and individual contests.
