Kwame Leo Lillard

 

Kwame Leo Lillard moved to Nashville, TN in 1943 with his family from Tampa, FL. His birthday is September 16, 1939.

He attended public schools in Nashville and graduated from Pearl High School in 1957.  He pursued his education and attended A & I University (now TSU) earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1961.  His life took him north to New York City where he earned Master of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from City College in 1966 and a Master of Science degree in Urban Design from Hunter College in 1971.

Kwame was part of the Central Committee Nashville Movement from 1960-61.  He was the coordinator for the sit-ins, stand-ins and Freedom Rides.  He was and still is aware of the Black struggles in America.

Today he is co-founder of the African American Cultural Alliance which started in 1983.  This organization has hosted for 29 years the annual African Street Festival on the Tennessee State University campus and now Hadley Park.  He is, also, working with the Haitian and Jamaican culture and youth programs/projects internationally.

Kwame is married with five children and one sister, Ellen.

Kwame has been and will always be a civil rights activist.
