Program Title   Reflections on Brazil

Program Description   The vastness of Brazil as the fifth-largest country in the world is spotlighted as Brazil encompasses half of all the land of South America and one-third of all the land of Latin America. From the hovels of Sao Paulo to the palaces of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has a rich cultural mix with many facets, including its racial melting pot (which often startles foreign visitors), economic challenges (Brazil remains a rich country full of poor people), and its carnival culture. Brazilians still have plenty to worry about--
rainforest depletion, a high rate of HIV/AIDS infection, and the most unequal distribution of wealth of any country in the world.
Program Format   Dr. Eakin will discuss his trips to Brazil and share slides dealing with the people and culture. We will then have an interactive Q and A with the classes participating.
Objectives   The participants will..
-gain an understanding of the varying people of Brazil
-be able to compare and contrast the various cultures within Brazil
-locate Brazil on world map

Participant Preparation   Please have students that will ask questions seated close to the front and near a microphone. Please make sure you understand how to mute and unmute your microphones.

Students should have SOME familiarity with this subject. Teacher should brainstorm with students before the videoconference and ask students to prepare some sample questions to ask presenter during the interactive question/answer session.

Cancellation Policy   The full fee will be charged to sites which cancel with less than 48 hours notice unless there is a school closing due to snow or weather emergencies.
