If you would like a phone line inside your residence ("residential land line"), you must order the service for your home or apartment. A deposit may be required before a telephone service will be installed. You must purchase the telephone itself separately. You will also need to contract with a long-distance phone carrier to make long-distance or international calls from your residential phone line. There are two types of cellular or mobile phones available in the United States; phones with pre-paid minutes and phones with monthly service plans that require you to sign a contract. The phones with monthly service plans provide you with a set number of minutes for a specific cost each month.  Dependent upon your length of stay in the United States and if you plan on being here for at least one year it may be cheaper to have a cellular phone with a monthly service plan under a contract.
