Professor Sharon Weiss (Electrical Engineering and Computer Science) is investigating porous silicon resonant waveguides as ultra-sensitive biosensors. Her goal is to reliably identify chemical and biological species at minute amounts for medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and homeland security,

“Porous silicon is an ideal material for biosensing because it enables enhanced interaction of light and biological materials on nanoscale dimensions for superior sensor performance,” Weiss says. She and her group are also exploring other resonant porous silicon devices for use in optical switching and enhanced light emission applications.

Vanderbilt University
