Research Area My project involves the synthesis, characterization, and application of CdSe ultrasmall nanocrystals. These quantum dots at about 1.5 nm in diameter have unique properties including the emission of perfect white light having the quality of the sun when a UV photon is absorbed. This allows for white LEDs to be made with only one semiconductor as opposed to trying to find a balance of several monochromatic-emitting semiconductors to make white light. The goal of my project is to make white LEDs made with these ultrasmall nanocrystals more efficient as well as to study the fundamental properties of this unique material.
