Research Information

The Weiss group primarily investigates the optical properties of materials at the nanoscale for applications in biosensing and light emitting diodes (LEDs). Porous silicon with controllable pore diametersbetween approximately 5-150 nm can be fabricated as thin films with variable refractive indices. These porous silicon thin films serve as the building blocks for optical structures such as waveguides, photonic crystals, microcavities, mirrors, and filters. The Weiss group can detect the presence of small molecules, such as DNA, using an
ultra-sensitive, high surface area porous silicon waveguide biosensor. The Weiss group is also working towards the development of white light phosphors and LED devices based on ultra-small CdSe nanocrystals, in collaboration with the Rosenthal group at Vanderbilt.
