Research Information

James is interested in developing strategies to synthesize ultrasmall nanocrystals and determine the mechanisms behind their nucleation and growth using sub-angstrom resolution Z-Contrast Scanning Transmission Microscopy (Z-STEM) and Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy (EELS). He has already applied these techniques in conjunction with Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy to elucidate the atomic structure and composition of traditional CdSe nanocrystals and CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots. This work is in calibration with Stephen Pennycook and Andrew Lupini at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
