Research Information

Professor Hmelo’s research interest is focused on the physics and engineering of the solid-liquid interface, and how the interaction between liquids and solids can be exploited for the realization of new materials and devices. His recent and present projects consider the physics of drops and bubbles. the containerless processing of materials, the influence of acoustics on phase transitions in under-cooled melts, and the physics of fluid transport and bubble formation in nano-confined structures. In the laboratory he employs a variety of chemical as well as optical, electron and focused ion lithographic techniques for the fabrication of micro- and nano-fluidic chips and devices.
