Research Information

Intracellular engineering explores experimental and mathematical methods to characterize and quantify physiological function at the level of intracellular components. Much of our research focuses on the endothelial cell. This cell type tiles the interior surface of the vasculature and is thought to have an important role in the normal and abnormal physiological functioning of many organs. We seek understand signaling dynamics, intercellular interactions and mechanism(s) of the transport of blood-borne materials across the normal transport barrier formed by the endothelium. Our goal is to reverse changes in abnormal cellular structure and function by producing beneficial intracellular modifications. As part of this interest, we have developed a new targeting technology for plasmids and antisense gene therapy applications. A new laboratory interest seeks to combine microarray technologies with our existing expertise to explore regulation of gene expression in diabetes. We also have an interest in furthering developing these new microarray technologies to increase their utility and therapeutic impact.
