Dr. Matthew Becker

“Using Peptides as Building Blocks for Functional Biomaterials”

Bio. Matthew L Becker is an Associate Professor in the Department of Polymer Science at the University of Akron.  After receiving an undergraduate degree from Northwest Missouri State University in 1998, he completed his PhD in Organic Chemistry under the supervision of Professor Karen L Wooley at Washington University in St. Louis. He was awarded a National Research Council postdoctoral fellowship to work with Eric J. Amis at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Biomaterials and Biophysics. In 2005, he joined the staff in the Polymers Division at NIST where he led programs in Combinatorial Methods for Tissue Engineering, Materials Directed Cell Function and Bioimaging. In 2009, he joined the Department of Polymer Science as an Associate Professor. He leads the Orthopaedic Technology Platform of the Austen Bioinnovation Institute in Akron and is the Co-director of the Akron Functional Materials Center.
