About VIIBRE

  VIIBRE pictures VIIBRE Organization

VIIBRE is organized as a self-governing scientific cooperative.

Scientific Advisory Board

The Scientific Advisory Board, with members from Vanderbilt and other institutions, provides strategic and administrative guidance for VIIBRE's research and teaching activities. The Board's expertise spans the major research areas being pursued by VIIBRE. The Scientific Advisory Board meets once a year to review VIIBRE's annual report and to review the plans for the forthcoming year. Individual consultations take place as opportunities for new collaborations or investigations arise. Board members are appointed for five-year, renewable terms.

VIIBRE Industrial Advisory Board

Members of the Industrial Advisory Board represent the technological areas of VIIBRE's research, development, and fabrication expertise. Corporate members are encouraged to sponsor internships for VIIBRE's graduate trainees, and several Board members collaborate on research projects. The Industrial Advisory Board meets once a year to advise on corporate collaborations and facilities development, and to guide translation of VIIBRE-developed devices and techniques to biologists and clinicians and to the commercial sector.

VIIBRE Scientific Steering Committee

The VIIBRE Scientific Steering Committee is composed of those individuals actively working within VIIBRE to direct projects, raise funds, and write papers. Appointments are for three years and members will be eligible for reappointment at the end of their term.

The objectives of this committee are to:
  • Establish short-term VIIBRE operating policies
  • Design the long-term VIIBRE strategy
  • Identify and pursue targets of opportunity in both science and funding
  • Prioritize the tasks to optimize the VIIBRE infrastructure
  • Motivate and coordinate publications and reviews
  • Define common VIIBRE technologies and platforms (lest we reinvent our own wheels)
  • Refine our teaching program, particularly as related to the Systems Biology and Bioengineering Undergraduate Research Experience (SyBBURE).

The committee meets as a whole twice a year, and there are numerous ad hoc meetings of sub-groups as the need arises, typically in response to an opportunity to submit a particular proposal or as part of an ongoing project.
