A
university advances through its faculty, and Vanderbilt professors
are at the forefront of their academic disciplines. They have held
virtually every major fellowship and won countless prestigious awards,
including Fulbright, Guggenheim, MacArthur, Mellon, National Endowment
for the Humanities, National Science Foundation, and Presidential
Young Investigators.
Professors
and students often work together as research partners and share
authorship of professional papers. Faculty advisers work closely
with students to create academic programs that meet individual aspirations.
Through the Faculty in Residence Program, some faculty members live
in the residence halls, adding another element to the interesting
mix of dormitory life.
Students remain
a central focus as faculty strive for professional excellence:
- student-faculty
ratio of 9:1
- an average
class size of 19
- 78 percent
of our undergraduate classes have fewer than 25 students
Vanderbilt undergraduates coauthor 25 percent of the research
papers published by our faculty and share in presenting their work
at professional conferences. For example, Centennial Professor Arthur
A. Demarest involved students in one of the world's largest excavations,
the Petexbatun Regional Archeological Project in Guatemala,
