Vanderbilt is unique among ecumenical theological schools because it educates ministers and religious scholars side by side, which encourages intellectual challenge that strengthens the training of both.

The threefold mission of the Divinity School is:

  1. to engage persons in the study of the Jewish and Christian traditions
  2. to help persons re-envision and prepare for the practice of ministry and
  3. to educate, through the Vanderbilt Graduate School's Department of Religion, future scholars and teachers of religious studies.

Quick facts about the Vanderbilt Divinity School:

  • Founded in 1875, following the 1873 founding of the University
  • Was under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South until May 1914
  • From 1914 to the present it has carried on its work as an ecumenical theological school under direction of the Vanderbilt University Board of Trust
  • In 1966 the Graduate School of Theology of Oberlin College merged with Vanderbilt
