Vanderbilt
is unique among ecumenical theological schools because it educates
ministers and religious scholars side by side, which encourages
intellectual challenge that strengthens the training of both.
The threefold mission of the Divinity School is:
- to engage persons in the study of the Jewish and Christian traditions
- to help persons re-envision and prepare for the practice of ministry
and
- to educate, through the Vanderbilt Graduate School's Department
of Religion, future scholars and teachers of religious studies.

facts about the Vanderbilt Divinity School:
- Founded
in 1875, following the 1873 founding of the University
- Was under
the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South until May
1914
- From 1914 to
the present it has carried on its work as an ecumenical theological
school under direction of the Vanderbilt University Board of Trust
- In 1966 the Graduate School of Theology of Oberlin College merged
with Vanderbilt
