Students interested in interdisciplinary Masters and Ph.D degrees in environmental management have several program options.  Note that in all cases the student must present a planned course of study for an interdisciplinary degree that requires approval of his/her research advisor and of the Graduate School.

Masters Programs:

A customized interdisciplinary Masters degree is offered through VCEMS. Students interested in this degree option should apply to the School of Engineering. 

Masters level candidates must complete 30 hours of coursework and most will complete a master's thesis.  This will largely depend on the individual degree being sought.
 

Ph.D Programs:

Students interested in obtaining a customized interdisciplinary Ph.D degree in environmental management should apply to the School of Engineering.

Ph.D students with research interests in Environmental Management are expected to complete a core curriculum of 16 courses that provide a foundation in law, engineering, management, and public policy.  Total course requirements are 36 hours at a minimum.  Students must also complete 36 hours of research in order to complete the Ph.D program requirements. In most cases, students entering with a Master's degree will be able to transfer and/or place out of a significant number of these with courses that are a suitable substitute.  Additionally, the faculty advisory committee may adjust this list based on the interests and needs of individual students.  The dissertation requirement consists of conducting environmental management/science research and preparing three separate manuscripts, each suitable for publication in a respected, peer-reviewed journal.  Contact  james.h.clarke@vanderbilt.edu for more details.
