About a dozen Vandy Law students come out to volunteer for JDF’s walk for the cure at 6am! JDF had over 3000 people out walking, and the Vandy volunteers helped make sure everything ran smoothly. Thanks to everyone who came out at the crack of dawn to lend their support!
Hands on Nashville Day- Sept. 27
Over 1,400 local residents and volunteers made the 17th annual "Hands On Nashville" Day the largest in the event's history, donating approximately 6,000 hours of their time to help Metro Nashville Public Schools. Vandy Law students once again came out early on a Saturday morning to volunteer at Hunters Lane High School, where they got to show off their fabulous landscaping skills.
Nashville Cares AIDS Walk- Oct. 4th
Dozens of Vandy Law Students came out and walked to support Nashville Cares in its effort to stop AIDS. Even more students contributed to the cause. Commodore Trot- Walk to Support the Vanderbilt Chapter of Habitat for Humanity - Oct. 29th
15 VULS students joined the VBA at the Vanderbilt Rec Center for a couple hours as we walked to support a fabulous cause, Habitat for Humanity. Other students also helped out by donating money. Registration was only $10 and the participants got a great t-shirt as thanks for their support.
Holiday Greeting Cards for St. Jude Children (December 8 - 12; 12-1pm on Mainstreet):
During finals VBA members and students made holiday cards for the children at St. Jude!
For those of you who do not know, St. Jude is a research hospital in Tennessee dedicated to finding a cure for pediatric cancer. Sadly, for many children at the hospital this may be their last time celebrating the holidays. Not only did they love receiving our cards and warm wishes for the holidays, the students felt good about taking the time to spread some holiday cheer.
Clayton Schwartz Memorial Book Drive - Jan 26th - Feb 6th:
This year Book'em, a Nashville-based organization, requested monetary donations and we were able to generate $1,473 and 333 books!
The book drive is named in memory of our colleague, Clayton, who was a driving force behind the annual book drive before his passing. Clayton will forever be missed, but the Clayton Schwartz Memorial Book Drive will live on in his honor.
Read Me Week:
Read Me Week provides an opportunity for Vandy Law Students to get off campus and into the community. Last year, we adopted two schools, Charlotte Park Elementary School, and Una Elementary School, and spent time reading with students at both schools. In total, Vanderbilt students read to more than 60 classrooms of Nashville children. Check this website this year for details on how you can get involved.
Habitat for Humanity Build - March 22nd:
Students were able to help with the Vanderbilt chapter of Habitat for Humanity's build, complete with breakfast, lunch and snacks, all while getting to help the community with construction and enjoying the beautiful weather. This build correlated with the Commodore Trot walk that many VULS students participated in during October.
VULS AIDS Awareness Week
During the Spring 2008 semester, the VBA hosted its first AIDS Awareness week. To increase awareness about AIDS and HIV, students wore red ribbons, attended an HIV/AIDS lecture, and participated in the Nashville AIDS Walk. By the end of the week, students had raised over $3,000 for Nashville Cares. Look to this website for next year's Awareness Week.
Homeless Awareness Project
VBA, Legal Aid Society, and Street Law teamed up to address an issue that is prevalent, yet often overlooked in our community: homelessness. For four weeks, Vandy Law students were mobilized to various organizations that serve the homeless. Opportunities ranged from serving meals to cooking with kids who don't have a home.
Responding to Disasters
Last year, tornadoes struck the southeastern portion of the United States, affecting thousands of people in Tennessee and surrounding states. In response, VBA had an ongoing drive to raise funds to support the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Approximately $3,000 was raised and delivered to the Red Cross.
