Vanderbilt Gives: Community
Every day Vanderbilt employees make our community better through our teaching, learning, healing and caring. Thanks to the support of donors, over $686,000 was raised in 2011 to help maintain and improve a community that is such an important part of our own Vanderbilt community.
Through the Vanderbilt Community Giving Campaign, nonprofit agencies in Middle Tennessee receive much needed assistance from the generous spirit of the Vanderbilt community. This year we are continuing our partnership with some of the area’s leading providers of services to those in need – United Way of Metropolitan Nashville, Community Health Charities, Community Shares and the Nashville Public Education Foundation. These organizations tackle some of our community’s toughest challenges – domestic violence, hunger, substance abuse, quality education, pollution and job training.
Collectively, we can better the lives of those around us and our community as a whole.

Community Partners / Federations
Community Health Charities of Tennessee and its members are working for a healthy Tennessee. One in four of our co-workers, family and friends are likely dealing with a chronic health condition as a patient or a caregiver. Our charities have local offices serving the Nashville community through medical research, support programs, financial assistance, educational materials and other patient services.
Community Shares “Building Social and Economic Equity and a Healthy Environment” is this federation’s emphasis. It funds local community-based organizations getting at the root causes of community problems of hunger, poverty, violence, and discrimination. An employee’s gift to Community Shares helps groups work for positive solutions to cleaner air and drinking water, accessible health care, cultural pride, and affordable services for low-income people.
Nashville Public Education Foundation supports Nashville's public schools. The Foundation works closely with Metro Nashville Public Schools to identify strategic educational initiatives that will move all of Nashville's schools forward. The Foundation invested $100,000 in the Urban Masters Program at Peabody and $44,500 to the School for Math and Science at Vanderbilt last year, thanks to your employee giving contributions.
United Way of Metropolitan Nashville is the driving force behind hundreds of initiatives that provide solutions to Nashville’s most critical needs. Our goal is to focus on what matters, and what matters is improving lives. Any eligible health and human services nonprofit organization may submit a proposal for United Way funding. These proposals undergo a rigorous approval process, and once funded, the programs are closely monitored by volunteers to ensure that the money is invested wisely and the programs get the best results.
