The Fred Coe Artist in Residence Series-
Going One on One with the Best

Every year, Vanderbilt Theatre students can participate in a master seminar taught by some of the most notable talents in their fields. Recent guest artists have included Academy Award-winning actress Olympia Dukakis, celebrated British stage actress Fiona Shaw, and American icon Karl Malden.
Students in these small classes have an opportunity to tap into the vast experiences and varied perspectives of these standouts - asking whatever is on their minds, growing as artists, and learning about what it takes to make it in "the business." Students frequently also socialize with these guest artists, expanding their education even further. For their part, their guest teachers often report that they've learned as much from their Vanderbilt students and wish to maintain their new friendships.

The Fred Coe Artist in Residence Series began in the late 1980s under the leadership of Vanderbilt alumnus and trustee Delbert Mann. An Academy Award winner himself, Mr. Mann directed movies starring Ernest Borgnine, David Niven, Deborah Kerr, and Doris Day in the 1950s and 60s. He named the Series in honor of his mentor and friend at the Nashville Community Playhouse, who encouraged him in the pursuit of his passion.
