Theatre at Vanderbilt-
A Special Environment in Which to Explore, Learn, and Grow

Theatre magnifies life so that we can examine it more closely and appreciate it more deeply. Watching live theatre can be an exhilarating experience, but creating it -becoming a theatre artist- can be a transforming one. Vanderbilt University provides a nurturing, high energy environment for a special breed of growing artists, regardless of the roles they wish to play in bringing their visions to life.

Theatre students aren't just numbers at Vanderbilt, but members of a supportive artistic community. They learn from a passionate and dedicated faculty, whose members have theatre as their sole academic focus. Students enjoy full access to senior faculty from the beginning, in small classroom settings and during the course of a varied production season. The program's intimacy also allows students many early opportunities to gain valuable experience.

Vanderbilt's academic theatre program covers a wide range of interests-including acting, directing, dramatic literature, theatre history and criticism, and theatre design and technology. All combine a healthy respect for the written word, practical experience, intellectual curiosity, and hands-on instruction.
We encourage students to explore as many areas that interest them, believing that this broad understanding will strengthen wherever they decide to focus. The VUT Student Organization gives them a great chance to experiment. It actually staffs and manages all crews during the production season, under the direction of the Department's senior faculty.
Similarly, the Theatre program encourages students to take full advantage of Vanderbilt's outstanding liberal arts tradition. Access to other disciplines-such as language, science, religion, philosophy, and art-not only makes for more well-rounded citizens, but also for better theatre artists.
Many other components add tremendously to the value of a Vanderbilt Theatre education. Neely Auditorium, the centrally located site of all mainstage productions, is one of the most unique and flexible theatre facilities in the nation.
The Fred Coe Artist In Residence Series brings theatre professionals to Vanderbilt to conduct master classes and seminars. It provides students direct contact with some of the stars of their fields.

Vanderbilt Theatre's Noontime program allows students opportunities to assume directing and design positions for one-act shows, with full access to theatre resources.

And for those wishing to move on to some of the best graduate programs around, Vanderbilt theatre faculty happily provide private coaching and support.

We hope you'll take a few moments to explore Vanderbilt Theatre more deeply through this site, see what current students and alumni report about the program, and contact us for more information or to set up a phone call or visit.

Theatre at Vanderbilt is not for everyone, but for those whose interests and needs match its intimate environment, sense of community, outstanding facilities, and place in a wonderful liberal arts setting, it can be a truly transforming experience. If this sounds like you, then we'd love you have you join us!
