Options for Recycling Ink Cartridges and Cell Phones
on Vanderbilt University Central Campus

Why should I recycle my used ink cartridges and cell phones?

Cell phones and ink and toner cartridges for your printer, fax, or copier contain chemicals that could be hazardous to the environment if landfilled and left to leak into the soil and groundwater. Additionally, the materials used for the casings (plastic, metals) do not readily biodegrade. Thus, it is preferable to recycle these materials to keep them out of landfills.

What are my options for recycling these materials?

Here at Vanderbilt, there are several options to help you recycle these items:

Support Vanderbilt Children's Hospital

Guy Brown will recycle laser toner and ink jet cartridges from Vanderbilt and donate a portion of the proceeds to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital!

How do I do it?

Call Guy Brown at 615.777.1500 or email customercare@guybrown.com to get free larger boxes for laser toners and a smaller box for ink jets (it’s OK to put ink jets in the larger box if you have both.) These boxes will be delivered to you free of charge and have pre-paid, pre-addressed labels on them.  The labels are coded to say that they came from VU so they know to give the proceeds to the Monroe Carell Jr. Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.

How do I send the ink cartridges back?

Call UPS for a free pick up.

 – OR –

Your Guy Brown driver can take the box back with him/her when they are on their regular delivery route to you.

When you run out of boxes, just call for more!

What about the clear envelopes?

You may have seen clear plastic pre-addressed envelopes around campus that are for ink cartridges and cell phones. While this Guy Brown envelope system is being phased out in favor of the boxes, Guy Brown will still accept any remaining envelopes.

What about cell phones?

Cell phones can go in with any of the boxes or envelopes to be recycled.

Another option for recycling ink cartridges: Contact SPEAR

The student environmental group on campus called SPEAR (Students Promoting Environmental Education and Recycling) also works with a collection system for large or small ink and toner cartridges for recycling. They are interested in doing this because they care about your cartridge not going into the landfill, and because they will get a portion of the proceeds of the recycling. To get this program started in your area, just email spear@vanderbilt.edu.
