Electronics Recycling Event a Huge Success

The Vanderbilt-sponsored Electronics Recycling Event filled 25 tractor trailers with electronics for recycling, with more than 1,000 people dropping off items during the community recycling event.

AASHE Member

AASHE, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, is a member-based organization that supports colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada working to create a sustainable future.

Their mission is to promote sustainability in all sectors of higher education - from governance and operations, to curriculum and outreach - through education, communication, research and professional development.  AASHE works in partnership with businesses, non-profit organizations and government agencies that support their mission.

AASHE aims to advance the efforts of the entire campus sustainability community by uniting diverse initiatives and connecting practitioners to resources and professional development opportunities. The association also provides a professional home for campus sustainability coordinators and directors.

AASHE defines sustainability in an inclusive way, encompassing human and ecological health, social justice, secure livelihoods, and a better world for all generations.

Membership in AASHE covers every individual at Vanderbilt

Everyone on campus is included in Vanderbilt's AASHE membership. Therefore, any Commodore (faculty, staff, or student) can access AASHE's members-only resources.  Vanderbilt's Environmental Health and Safety Department (VEHS) pays the annual membership fee to AASHE so that any Vanderbilt faculty, staff, or student can utilize AASHE's resources.  To create an account with AASHE, click here and follow the directions.  Use your campus email address as your "username." 

Dr. Andrea George, Director of Vanderbilt's Sustainability and Environmental Management Office (SEMO) is on the AASHE Advisory Council.  This Council supports the organization’s growth and development and advises the AASHE Board of Directors and staff on complex or specialized matters as well as general programmatic goals and direction. Advisory Council members:

--Provide advice on programs and strategic direction to the board of directors and staff.

--Promote AASHE to colleagues and connect the organization with leaders who can assist in advancing the organization’s mission.

--Solicit funding through memberships, donations, grants, sponsorships, and in-kind contributions.

--Sponsor/support AASHE activities and attend AASHE-sponsored events.

--Promote linkages between higher education and businesses, nonprofits, and government.

--Provide feedback regarding curriculum development, collaborative projects, and internship programs.
