Hamilton Springs: a Transit Friendly Community
A new type of sustainable community is coming to town! Hamilton Springs, Middle Tennessee’s first transit-oriented development, recently broke ground in Lebanon, TN. The development will create a traditional neighborhood “village” of residents and businesses with a Music City Star commuter train station at its center.
Transit-oriented development is a mixed use residential or commercial development designed to maximize access to public transport, and often incorporates features to encourage transit ridership. It strives to increase walkability, sustainability, and help to provide transportation and housing choices as the population continues to look for more affordable and active places to live. It is the first Middle Tennessee development planned, designed, and constructed to emphasize use of transportation modes other than cars.
The new community will feature multiple housing options, commercial and office areas, walkable suburban areas, greenways, and pocket parks, and a proposed Music City Star commuter rail stop. The Hamilton Springs Specific Plan has been commended by transportation and planning officials throughout the region who have noted that the project will encourage community and economic development efforts and enhance the transportation infrastructure in a sustainable way.
