Plant Operations is ready this winter for snow and ice with a new de-icer that’s eco-friendly.

Morton® Eco-Safe Ice Melter will be used in areas where Plant Ops staff distribute de-icing product by hand, such as walkways and stairwells.

Eco-Safe Ice Melter uses potassium chloride instead of calcium chloride, which is more commonly used in ice melting products and is a much harsher compound.

“Our first responsibility is to the safety of our faculty, students, patients, staff and visitors, and we also strive to protect our environment,” said Mark Petty, assistant vice chancellor for Plant Operations.  “Eco-Safe is a safe and efficient product that lets us do both. “

The Eco-Safe product results in less damage to plants, animals, concrete, surface water and eventually groundwater while still melting snow and ice at temperatures as low as 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
