Fitness Assessments

Fitness Assessments are performed by professional staff of the Student Recreation Center. Appointments for Fitness Assessments must be made at least 24 hours prior. Hours available for Fitness Assessments in the Wellness Resource Center are limited, so honoring appointments is important.

Please contact Johnny Pryor at johnny.pryor@vanderbilt.edu to schedule, cancel, or reschedule an appointment.

Fitness Assessments evaluate several different areas of fitness:

  • Cardiovascular Fitness: Resting Heart Rate and Bike Test. The participant’s resting heart rate is taken at the start of the assessment to evaluate cardio effectiveness. The participant’s heart rate is monitored while pedaling an stationary bicycle in a closely controlled environment. This test will determine the participant’s level of oxygen consumption. Participant is monitored by the WRC Staff member conducting the evaluation.
  • Muscular Strength and Endurance: Push-up and Abdominal Crunch Tests. The participant does as many push-ups and crunches as comfortably possible. Women may do modified push-ups. Both men and women must do crunches, and not full sit-ups. Count is taken by WRC Staff member.
  • Flexibility: Sit and Reach Test. Participant sits on the floor and stretches as comfortably as is possible. Measurement is taken by WRC Staff member.
  • Body Composition: 6-Site Skin f old Measurement and Body Mass Indicator. The body composition evaluation is a 7-site skin fold measurement taken with a skin caliper. The seven sites are:
        Front of Quadriceps (Thigh)
        Front of Hip
        Waist (abdomen)
Back, near point of Scapula (shoulder blade)
        Triceps (back of arm)
Chest in from shoulder along Pectoral muscle
        Middle of side (maxilla)

Body Mass Index can be figured using the participant’s weight, height, and body frame size.
