|Work on the Natchez Field is almost complete.
Please note the Squash courts will be closed due to renovations from May 1st, 2013 until August 31 st, 2013. We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause while visiting here at the Rec Center during this time.
The Basketball Courts will be closed on Monday, May 6 from 5:30 am – 11 am due to gymnasium duct work being installed.
Vanderbilt University broke ground on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 on a new Multipurpose Field House, additions to the Recreation Center and renovation of recreation fields. The increase in space will greatly enhance the recreation experience for the university’s students, faculty, staff and alumni. It will help alleviate some of the overcrowding and lack of facilities within the current recreation facilities.
We were recognized in 1990 as one of the top ten Recreation Centers in America by the Athletic Business Magazine. This recognition has and will continue with our new Vanderbilt additions.
The Field House and Recreation Center additions will increase recreation space by 160,000 square feet. The total building (new and existing) will then be 299,000 square feet. The Field House will include a 120 yard turf field surrounded by a 300 meter track. The facility will be available for varsity teams, intramural sports, club sports and informal recreation. Recreation Center additions will include over 8000 square feet of fitness room space, seven multi-purpose rooms and four lane bowling alley. All intramural, sport clubs, and free exercise activities, will increase dramatically. The hours of operation will expand as well. This is extremely exciting for the entire Vanderbilt community.
The majority of the addition work is being done around the perimeter of the Recreation Center. This will allow construction to continue and have minimal impact on the current operation of the Recreation Center. The entrance to the Recreation Center will move to a temporary location at the front of the center. Access to the Recreation Center from 25th Ave. side is being planned now. Squash courts will be unavailable for a short time later during renovations, (new international size courts will be built) but the remainder of the facility will largely be unaffected.
As of Tuesday, September 18, the Rob Roy Purdy fields were closed as construction begins on the new Multi-Purpose facility. However, the McGugin turf field will be available to be used as an additional playing surface, at certain times.
Please pardon our dust over the next few months as we make these great improvements to YOUR Recreation Center and we enter a new era of recreational services. We will keep you posted on the progress of each stage with postings on our website; front entry signage and all other Vanderbilt media publications. Let the work begin.
