VSS Group Lessons

Our lessons are on a first come first serve basis. It is required that you mail or bring in your registration form with check, cash, or money order to the Office of Campus Recreation at the Student Recreation Center, Monday-Friday from 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM. (Credit cards are not accepted). Class fees must be paid in full at time of registration. Absolutely NO refunds or make-ups for missed classes.

Swimming skills are difficult to master. It may require multiple sessions of lessons to learn to swim. You may register for more than one session at a time. Prices vary for Group Lessons depending on Session and Ability Levels you are signing up for. VU Employees, Students & SRC members will receive a $5.00 discount off Group Lessons (No Private Lesson Discount applicable)

2013 REGISTRATION FORM- Make all checks payable to Vanderbilt University

A registration confirmation / information letter will be handed or mailed to you upon receipt of your registration form with payment. Group lesson registration is conducted on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning March 04, 2013. Mail or bring in your completed form with check, cash, or Money Order to the Office of Campus Recreation at the Vanderbilt Recreation Center, Monday-Friday from 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, to ensure first-choice availability (Credit Cards not accepted). For further assistance please call 615-322-SWIM or email swimschool@vanderbilt.edu. You may register for more than one session at a time. Please keep in mind, swimming skills are difficult to master. It may require multiple sessions of lessons to learn to swim.

Vanderbilt Swim School Parking 2013 – Please note the change in parking availability for all private and group lessons effective March 1, 2012. Limited metered parking is located on Children’s Way directly behind the Student Recreation Center. The meters are enforced from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, Monday – Friday. The sidewalk on the east side (Children’s Way) of the Vanderbilt Recreation Center has closed. Patrons parking on Children’s Way will access the center by 25th Ave or Natchez Trace. The Office of Campus Recreation will not be responsible for ticketing and / or towing fees. Thank you for your participation in The Vanderbilt Swim School.

CampVandy Swim School Transfers

CampVandy participants signed up for CampVandy Aftercare Service can be transferred from CampVandy to the Vanderbilt Swim School for the 4 pm class only.  Parents must purchase CampVandy Aftercare Services Monday-Thursday to be able to participate in the CampVandy Swim School transfer program. Participants MUST be transferred for the ENTIRE week they are registered for camp to receive this service.

Please check the Vanderbilt Swim School Group Lessons spots available above for available classes at that time. Registration forms and payments must be received in the VSS Office to book a swim school class. Group lessons registration is conducted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Class Descriptions and Qualifications

Parent/Child 30 Minutes 6 months to 3 years The Parent/Child class teaches parents how to assist their child in adjusting to the water through the use of nursery rhymes and games. Class consists of structured and unstructured time with instructor assistance.One adult must be in the water with each child. Blowing bubbles, floating, basic arm strokes, kicking, underwater exploration
Introductory 30 Minutes 3 years and up The Introductory class is for children who are apprehensive about swimming and going underwater. The main goal of this class is to help children feel comfortable in the water and set the ground work for learning to swim without a parent. Class limited to 4 children per instructor. Blowing bubbles through mouth and nose, breathing, floating, gliding, basic arm strokes, kicking, underwater exploration.
Beginner 1 40 Minutes 4 years and up The Beginner 1 class is for children who have little or no independent swimming skills, but are not scared of the water. We expect beginner swimmers, especially with no previous group lesson experience,to be a little nervous the first few days of class. Class limited to 5 children per instructor. Breathing, floating, gliding, basic arm strokes, kicking, treading water
Beginner 2 40 Minutes 4 years and up The Beginner 2 class is for children who are able to swim at least 5 yards on their front and back unsupported.Class limited to 5 participants per instructor. Gliding, breathing, basic freestyle, basic backstroke, kicking, treading water, diving
Advanced Beginner 40 Minutes 4 years and up The Advanced Beginner class is for children who are able to swim at least 15 yards (approximately half way across a 25 yard pool)on their front and back unsupported. Class limited to 6 children per instructor. Freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, diving, treading water

  • Session 3 Classes will NOT meet on Thursday, July 4, for Independence Day
  • All Group Lesson sessions are Monday-Thursday for two consecutive weeks.
  • Each Friday is reserved for any cancellations within the session, determined by the VSS staff. i.e. inclement weather, unexpected pool closures, etc.
  • CampVandy participants signed up for aftercare can be transferred from CampVandy to the Vanderbilt Swim School for the 4 p.m. class only.
