The Federal Work Study Program vs.
Institutional Employment

The Federal Work Study Program (FWSP) is a federally funded program designed to provide part-time employment opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students with demonstrated financial need. FWS funds allocated to the university usually pay 75% of the student's wages and the university departmental employer pays the remaining percentage of wages.

The Office of Student Financial Aid determines eligibility for FWS as established by federal regulations. Students are notified of their FWS award, along with other financial aid awards. All students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before eligibility may be determined.

All Vanderbilt University students are eligible to seek and obtain Student Institutional Employment (IE) positions. Wages for Institutional Employment positions are not subsidized by the federal government; the employing department pays 100% of the student's wages.

Student's Work Week

Undergraduate and all international students may not work more than 20 hours per week, inclusive of all positions, while school is in session.

Graduate/ Professional students may not work more than 29.5 hours per week, inclusive of all positions, while school is in session. Academic programs may have additional restrictions on maximum number of hours worked weekly.
