The purpose of the Center for Student Professional Development is to help VU students and recent graduates (0-2 years out) utilize the Vanderbilt network and make the most of their education, resources, and connections to secure internship and full-time post graduate opportunities.
The Center provides many ways for undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni to talk with a Career Adviser about their career-related needs.
Career Advising
Students/Alumni wanting to discuss their personal career path and job search strategy from initial thoughts to assessing job offers (or their graduate/professional school plans) may make an appointment with one (or more) of our staff. Students interested in medicine and other health-related professions will find their required science courses are complemented by Vanderbilt’s liberal arts core of writing, humanities, and social science coursework. In the medical school selection process no one major has an advantage; in fact, Vanderbilt graduates who enrolled in medical school in 1999 represented majors from neuroscience to English to child development. Approximately 70% of Vanderbilt’s pre-med students are enrolled in medical school within 1 year of their graduation.
Once pre-med students arrive on campus, they can begin working with the Health Professions Advisory Office to plan their curriculum and to prepare for applying to medical school. The Health Professions Advisory Office also works with students interested in other health-related professions such as dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine. Prospective students are encouraged to get more information from the comprehensive website listed below.
Pre-med students at Vanderbilt also have the opportunity to apply for early acceptance to the Vanderbilt School of Medicine. Students with a minimum GPA of 3.5 may apply during the spring of their sophomore year. The early acceptance program is highly selective and no more than 12 Vanderbilt undergraduates are accepted per year. If granted admission, the student is assured of a place in the first year class of the School of Medicine following his or her graduation from Vanderbilt.
